Years ago my brother read a study on sleep and told me that one of the experiments conducted had been to take men and women of all ages in the woods, completely offline and without watches of time tracking devices, to simply observe their sleeping patterns. I was surprised to hear that on average we sleep for 10 hours per night. That’s also when I learned about the different sleep cycles we go through each night (light, deep and rapid eye movement), and how having an alarm clock waking you up during the middle of one makes us more tired than if we would’ve woken up earlier at the end of the previous cycle. The truth is that most people do not get enough sleep, and the quality of our sleep has been hampered by modern life. For those who love to sleep, but always wake up ill-disposed, the app Sleep Cycle can be a life-changer.
Sleep Cycle is an intelligent alarm clock that uses both your smart phone’s accelerometer to detect movements and microphone to analyze your sleep, and gently starts waking you up in the lightest sleep phase. Simply place your phone in the corner of your bed or on the floor and let the app analyze your sleep to find the optimal time to wake you up during a 30 minute time window that ends at your set alarm time. It is during the lightest sleep that we wake up naturally and feel most rested. Thank god as a work-at-home entrepreneur I no longer have to put an alarm but instead can wake whenever I want (the irony is that I now wake up much earlier than when I had a 9-5 job because I’m actually motivated to work), but for those hiking, airport, and now early coaching calls days taking with students in Asia, I always use Sleep Cycle.
I believe the app used to cost 0.99$ back when I first got it, but is now free with premium features. ‘
